Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha hi lo begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting follows where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. After all the players have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of players can get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same notion in nearly every poker game.

The lower hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

While it seems difficult initially, following a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi low offers an overwhelming array of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have many players shooting for the high, as well as several trying for the low hand.
