Omaha hi low begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting ensues in which players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is flipped. The players will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where some entrants often get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely three cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical concept in nearly every poker game.
The low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
