Omaha Hi Lo: Fundamental Summary

[ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha Hi-Lo begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting follows and then the river card is revealed. The players will have to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same notion in nearly all poker games.

The low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

Although it seems complex at the outset, after a few hands you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi low provides an exciting array of betting possibilities and because you have several individuals shooting for the high, as well as many trying for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
