Omaha Hi Low: General Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha hi/low starts like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering follows in which players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another round of betting ensues. After all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a few players can get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same concept in almost all poker games.

A low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

While it seems complicated at the start, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the base nuances of play with ease. Since you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting array of betting possibilities and seeing that you have numerous individuals shooting for the high, and several trying for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to compete in Omaha/8.
