Omaha Hi-Low: Fundamental Summary

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting ensues where players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another round of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few players can get confused. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same notion in nearly every poker game.
A lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.
It may seem complex at the start, after a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of play simply enough. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an amazing collection of wagering options and seeing that you have several individuals battling for the high, along with many battling for the low. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha High-Low.
