Omaha Hi Low: Fundamental Outline

[ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha hi/lo begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of wagering follows where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting follows and then the river card is flipped. The players will have to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some entrants often get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to utilize precisely three cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same concept in nearly every poker game.

The lower hand is more complex, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem complex at the outset, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the base nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha Hi-Lo provides an exciting assortment of betting choices and seeing that you have several individuals shooting for the high, and a few trying for the low. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha High-Low.
